Studenti Universitari e Bevande Alcoliche: un Connubio Pericoloso
Ci sono studenti che passano attraverso l’esperienza universitaria, che sappiamo essere composta oltre che di studio anche di feste ed altri eventi sociali, senza sviluppare problemi di alcolismo. Altri invece possono diventare bevitori assidui e soddisfare rapidamente i criteri per una dipendenza.
È possibile prevedere quali ragazzi avranno maggiori probabilità di diventare bevitori problematici o alcolisti?
Le statistiche mostrano che il numero di studenti che bevono durante gli anni di università non è cambiato negli ultimi 20 anni; ciò che è cambiato è quanto spesso bevono e quanto alcol consumano quando bevono. I ricercatori della Scuola di Medicina dell’Università di Yale hanno trovato almeno due indicatori che sono collegati agli studenti che sviluppano problematiche correlate all’alcol prima di terminare l’università.
Dopo aver analizzato un campione di 1.160 matricole (766 donne, 394 maschi) dall’inizio del percorso scolastico e per tutti i quattro anni di college, la Dott.ssa Meghan Morean ed il suo gruppo di lavoro hanno scoperto che gli studenti che hanno sviluppato problemi legati all’alcol spesso avevano iniziato a bere in tenera età.
Sono stati condotti molti studi che collegano il consumo iniziale di alcol a problemi più tardi nella vita, come alcolismo, problemi legali e problemi di salute, ma lo studio condotto a Yale ha evidenziato che iniziare a bere in una età molto precoce può essere un fattore predisponente allo sviluppo di problematiche alcol-correlate in età adulta molto prima rispetto a coloro che bevono la prima bevanda alcolica più tardi.
La Dott.ssa Morean in un comunicato stampa afferma che “un adolescente che ha consumato il suo primo drink all’età di 15 anni era a maggior rischio di alcolismo e problemi rispetto ad un adolescente che ha bevuto il suo primo drink all’età di 17 anni; inoltre, un adolescente che assume la sua prima bevanda all’età di 15 anni e che alla stessa età si intossica con l’alcol per la prima volta era a maggior rischio di sviluppo di problematiche importanti rispetto ad un adolescente che beveva per la prima volta all’età di 15 anni ma senza ubriacarsi fino almeno all’età di 17 anni. “
Cosa mostrano le statistiche sulla dipendenza tra i giovani?
Le statistiche mostrano che l’età media per iniziare a bere per gli studenti delle scuole superiori è tra i 14 ed i 15 anni, quindi sono molti i giovani potenzialmente a rischio di sviluppare problemi legati all’alcol, continua la Dott.ssa Morean. Queste problematiche comprendono una compromissione dello sviluppo cerebrale, danni al fegato durante l’adolescenza, comportamenti sessuali ad alto rischio, scarso rendimento a scuola e uso di altre sostanze come la marijuana e la cocaina.
Gli autori raccomandano che gli sforzi di prevenzione e intervento siano sviluppati con l’obiettivo di ritardare l’inizio del consumo di alcol, specialmente per quegli studenti ad alto rischio – quelli con personalità impulsive o una storia familiare di alcolismo.
Le dipendenze da alcool sono comunque curabile, specialmente se il problema non è ancora esageratamente cronicizzato, si possono ottenere ottimi risultati. La dipendenza può essere affrontata in una delle sedi SERD sul territorio o direttamente con l’ausilio di uno specialista di fiducia.
